Naples Airport Living Walls
Biophilia in Florida!
When the Naples airport was ready to renovate its main terminal lobby, its designers had in mind that two large living walls would act as the centerpiece. Connecting the indoors to the outside, one large exterior wall, featuring orchids and bromeliads, was included as well. These Living Walls were designed to wow visitors and welcome them to tropical Naples Florida. The airport went on a nationwide hunt to find the living wall designer and installer that would achieve this goal. Impressed by the quality of our portfolio, we were contacted to learn more. The design and construction team was able to speak with our founder, lead engineer, and living wall designer, Tyler Wolf, who answered every question and concern the team had.
Naples Living Wall Challenges
Urban Blooms’ accessibility and knowledge of living walls gave the airport the confidence they needed to award us the contract even though we are located 800 miles away from Naples. This distance led us to improve our systems by improving our ability to control and adjust our systems from anywhere in the world. Maintenance would also need to be adapted to work on an installation so far away. We facilitated the maintenance contract with a local plant company that give our team status updates. On occasion, our team will check in on the wall and make any necessary irrigation adjustments. This hybrid maintenance approach gives us the ability to ensure a beautiful installation while finding the most cost-effective solution.
Outcome
What resulted was a series of stunning installations that are an ode to the beautiful city of Naples. All plants were locally sourced within 100 miles and feature over 40 different species. The interior living walls stretch from floor to ceiling and are surrounded by a marble lobby, creating a fantastic biophilic design element. Upon completion we received amazing feedback from the clients and contractors, some people saying they have seen living walls around the world but none as beautiful as those created by our team at Urban Blooms. A few months after the installation we received a call to be featured in the Gulf Shore Business magazine in an article they were writing on the airport renovation. We look forward to bringing more custom living walls to Naples Florida and the surrounding area.
