Corryville Kroger, Cincinnati Ohio
Background
In 2016, Kroger embarked on a mission to design a store that both integrated with and contributed to the vibrant University of Cincinnati community. Urban Blooms was honored to be selected to design and install a stunning 42-foot-tall living wall in the food court and bar area. To celebrate the incredible diversity of the neighborhood, we incorporated 30 different plant species—from vibrant bromeliads and towering 5-foot ferns to banana trees, delicate philodendrons, and trailing wandering Jews. The wide variety of plants showcased the flexibility and customizability of our system, perfectly suited to bring this living installation to life.
Challenges
Our engineers developed a custom design that overcame significant challenges related to irrigation and lighting, given the wall’s impressive height and indoor location. We implemented a fully automated irrigation system integrated with the building’s plumbing, delivering water treated with organic fertilizer to ensure each plant receives the ideal balance of moisture and nutrients. Additionally, a series of light tracks equipped with specially tuned, full-spectrum LED lights enables the living wall to thrive indoors, despite minimal natural light.
Outcome
Completed in February 2017, this living wall brings a daily touch of nature and beauty to shoppers and employees alike. Students, professors, and local business professionals frequently gather in the seating areas surrounding the wall, creating a collaborative environment reminiscent of the innovative workspaces found at leading Silicon Valley companies. This installation, combined with the spacious and thoughtful interior design, stands as a proud example of corporate responsibility embraced by both Kroger and the University of Cincinnati community.
